I have found some of his poems in the web but I believe there is more to discover, after the forthcoming web edition of his work.
I trust that your endeavour is answering the question expressed in the last verse of his "Smajd igy tűnődöm...?”

“But tell me, the work--did that live on?”

A prophetic poem indeed, considering the anecdotal discovery of his poems, on his dead body, buried with him in the mass grave after his execution and his concern for the survival of his work in the almost literal descriptions of the decay of his dead body and the rummaging of time in the poem.Πόλυ Χατζημανωλάκηhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01569886842775925862noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6234716624233114493.post-3390067527957169522009-08-26T20:26:05.120+03:002009-08-26T20:26:05.120+03:00Απολαυστική η ανάρτηση και η εικονογράφηση.

I knew about him, but never saw a picture of the statue. Yes, this seems to be a particular gesture of the intellectuals of that time (it recalls me some other contemporary portraits, too), and one which well expresses the weight of their anxiety.

Although Babits wrote several times against Nazism, nevertheless in Hungary the true symbol of anti-Nazism is considered his pupil, the young Miklós Radnóti, “the Hungarian García Lorca”, who was killed in 1945, shortly before the end of the Nazi occupation. As you know, we are just working on the web edition of his legacy that will be published in a few months.

In the meantime I localized the English translation in a library, and I also hope to find a nice edition of the book from the 1970s illustrated by the great master of graphics Miklós Borsos. It appears to be characteristic of the intellectuals of that time, looking preoccupied and concerned for the approaching war and totalitarianism. He reminds me (the posture) of Kostis Palamas (1859-1943) who, among others, has been called “national” poet of Greece. Kostis Palamas’s funeral ended as a major protest during the Nazi occupation in Athens.

I am indebted for your kind thought to find an English translation of the Book of Jonah by Babits, and I am looking forward to it.Πόλυ Χατζημανωλάκηhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01569886842775925862noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6234716624233114493.post-38369502890251588692009-08-25T12:19:07.715+03:002009-08-25T12:19:07.715+03:00Yes, indeed the most touching part of the Jonah st...Yes, indeed the most touching part of the Jonah story, which runs across it as a red thread, is his autonomy and continuous rebellion and fight for his own truth in face of God. (And, let us add, also the good humour of God in his “replies”.)

One of the greatest Hungarian poems, the “Book of Jonah” written by Mihály Babits in 1938, shortly before his death and in view of the menacing future, represents Jonah in the same way. This is why I love it so much. I will look for a good English translation for you. In the meantime it is worth to read two blog posts on it which I found while checking whether the English version is on the net (it is not). This one is a short summary of the poem with some verses quoted, while this one illustrates that some verses of this poem are as deeply imbibed in Hungarian thought as the story itself in our European civilization – as it is well attested by your beautiful bouquet of literary and visual examples.Studiolumhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06377777909296284368noreply@blogger.com
